October playlist time. One Michael Jackson song. Isn't Thriller.

It's impossible to feel down when Michael Jackson is playing, especially his arguably most upbeat song. So that's how this October playlist starts. Because I think we could all use a little something upbeat in our lives.

I waffled on the last time I posted a monthly playlist, because I had a lot of #feels. Being unemployed is still very depressing, but I've started writing more, just in my notes app, as a free therapy session. Less need to unload here now. 

I've also been working on a mega Premier League post that I need to get around to sharing tomorrow else it'll all become irrelevant, so hopefully I'll get around to that too. 

Playlist highlights!

I've been waiting for Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard to release new music with her new band, Bermuda Triangle, for months. And they finally did! I fell in love with the song Rosey when I heard it on a Youtube video shot on an iPhone at a small concert. The drum machine doesn't kick quite as hard as it did in the live show, but the stunning harmonies are still intact. 

New Sam Smith music is starting to trickle out too, and his sophomore album comes out in November. Not long now! He's said it's a project to be listened to as a whole, so I'm very excited. His voice singing "Everyone prays in the end" on his newest song, Pray, is way more powerful than I could've imagined. 

I listened to Tyler The Creator's album when it came out a few months back, but for some reason, it really clicked in my head this month. I love how simultaneously nasty and playful it is. And I've yet to find a Frank Ocean feature I didn't like. 

Similarly, Earl Sweatshirt is someone I never really listened to, and have only just discovered, but I love the cadence he raps with — it's informal, and fuzzy, like a sketch of a song. Perfect for lazy mornings where I still want a beat on in the background.

New Banks single, because Banks makes some great songs.

Benjamin Clementine's new album, I Tell a Fly, is.... really fuckin' weird. It's really tough to get into, and he knows it. Supposedly it's about Aleppo, and love between two flies, but how anybody would get that is beyond me. Jupiter is probably the most "listenable" song on the album, but I'll be very sad if he never makes anything quite as beautiful as Condolences, or a few other tracks from his first album...

Lastly, and speaking of reclusive geniuses, King Krule released new music this month too! It felt like the culmination of his beat work on A New Place 2 Drown, and his jazzy, grungy sound and songwriting from his King Krule debut. The whole album is worth a listen, but I picked a few personal highlights for the playlist.
